6) Update on costs for Longtail Beach Lane Widening

STAFF REPORT:

This issue was discussed at the March 25th meeting. At that time the commission requested staff to solicit costs of widening the roadway and installing curb and gutter at southwest corner of the Lakeview Drive Longtail Beach Road intersection.

Attached for your review is a quote from MCC to perform the above referenced work.

The cost for lane widening is $2.76 per linear foot. Widening both sides of the roadway involves approximately 5,280 linear feet, at a cost of $14,573.00. The curb and gutter quote at the intersection is $20.00 per linear foot for a total cost of $1,420.00.

I spoke with the Brown County Highway Department regarding any concerns they may have with this curb and gutter installation. Cleo Klubertanz stated that they would not have any issues if 30" mountable curbing was installed.

Lee Nelson with MCC strongly questioned the addition to the travel lanes. He noted that DOT and Brown County have installed this type of feature but that those applications were used on roadways with a 24 foot traveled way. On local roadways Lee feels that the joint area of the pavement addition will be utilized as the travel path and the joint will fail. He stated that he does not feel that residents would be satisfied with the results. You will also note on his quote that MCC will not warranty this type of application.
